Navina
completed her PhD in 1988, from Jamia Milia Islamia
University in New Delhi under the supervision of Dr.
Narayani Gupta well known urban historian, and Dr.
Kapila Vatsyayan, presently India’s representative at
the UNESCO, and head of Asia Project at the India
International Centre,
Delhi.
Her
research has been a detailed documentation of social
organisation and performing structures of North Indian
performing communities, and patronage related to the
field of Kathak and related arts in various urban towns
of Delhi,Lucknow, Varanasi, Rampur, Raigarh. She is
presently working on her book.
She was awarded
Research Fellowship by the Indira Gandhi Centre for the
Arts for her research on Kathak, Patronage, and
Performing Communities of North Indian Cities. Research
Fellowship by the Department of Culture, government of
India, on Antecedents of Kathak, West Asian
Links.
She was also a research Fellow at the
Kathak Kendra, National School of Kathak Dance (1998-99)
to bridge theoretical aspects with the practical aspects
of transmission systems, and aesthetics.
She has
a detailed documentation on living heritage of the
markets, folk life and activities such as creative arts,
and Sufism in the towns of Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi,
Badayun, Rampur, Raigarh. Presently she is
working on issues of Cultural diplomacy, and
management.
Her research in dance continues with
exploration of indigenous literature associated with
Kathak dance, and is specialising in performance on the
mimetic aspect known as Abhinaya.
Navina
has taught a paper on Performing Arts History at the
Master level in the Department of History in 1997, at
the Jamia Milia University.
She has also taught a
paper for the Art Appreciation Programmes at the
National Museum, New Delhi, on Inter-relations between
Performing and Visual Arts.
She spoke on a
platform titled : TALK - "Cultural Spaces: Changing
Mindsets & Exploring New Horizons" - presided upon
by Dr. Kapila Vatsayayan and featuring Dr. Navina Jafa,
organised by Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi,

Read a
paper titled : Storytelling: Methods of Communicating
Cultural Heritage at Asian Conference on Storytelling
organized by association of Writers and Illustrators for
Children and Indian Board for Books for Young People in
2005.
